5 Side Hustles You Can Start Today

How does an extra $100 sound? What about an extra $500? Or even $1,000? One of the best ways to earn extra income outside of your full-time job is by establishing a side hustle. Would you like side hustles you can start today?

Side hustling is a great way to make good use of your free time, diversify your income, and earn some extra cash whether it’s for travel, debt payoff, or just to save or pay bills.

Side hustling helped me pay off my car loan last year and make a huge dent in my student loans this year. If you want to start side hustling, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Side Hustles

The key is finding something that interests you, is flexible enough to manage alongside your regular job, and allows you to earn a decent amount of extra income.

Here are 5 side hustles you can start today.

1. Sell Items Online

If you have old clothes, movies, furniture, children’s toys etc. that you need to get rid of, one of the best ways to earn money quickly is to sell them online or even at a local consignment shop.

The best places to sell your items online are Amazon or Ebay which allows you to create a free listing and describe your item so you can ship it out to the customer who buys it. It only takes a few minutes to sign up as a seller on Amazon or Ebay and list your item.

If you have larger items like furniture, it may be best to sell those online through Craigslist or at a local consignment shop that will buy it from you. Craigslist will connect you with a local buyer so you can coordinate a time and place to meet up and exchange the item for the price agreed upon.

Some of my favorite consignment shops that buy clothing include Clothes Mentor and Plato’s Closet for adult clothing and Once Upon a Child for children’s clothing, toys, and other baby gear. Disc Replay is a store that will buy your old movies, games, and game systems. Check and see which stores are in your area.

To build a steady income, some people actually flip used items by heading to the thrift store to pick up items in good condition, then selling them online for a profit.

2. Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is one of my favorite side hustles because it’s flexible, pays well, and you can write about topics that interest you. Freelance writers write blog posts, articles, and other documents for websites and other businesses.

An entry-level freelance writer can earn $30+ per post while experienced writers can earn much more. Sometimes it’s not chump change either. Writers who work with corporate clients with bigger budgets can earn $200+ per post.

The best part about freelance writing is that there are plenty of gigs to go around. You don’t need a degree to get started as long as you understand basic grammar and can proofread your own work for quality.

To get started, you’ll need to set up an online portfolio which you can do for free with Contently so you can showcase examples of your work. You can search for gigs on job boards like Upwork or Problogger but you can also cold pitch potential clients by reaching out to bloggers with, busy entrepreneurs, and businesses who outsource article writing.

3. Test Out Websites

During your free time, you can get paid to test out websites. UserTesting is a popular website that pays people to review other websites and blogs.

Testers get paid $10 for each 20-minute review and they just answer simple questions and record their first impressions and experience navigating through the website.

If you only have 1 hour per week to dedicate, you can easily do 3 reviews in that time and earn an easy $120/month (before taxes). That’s enough to pay a bill, make a savings contribution, or put toward a nice dinner out with friends or family.

You can sign up for UserTesting by visiting their website.

4. Complete Tasks on Fiverr

Fiverr is a digital marketplace that allows you to buy and sell gigs which are small tasks for $5 and up. Fiverr sellers are located all over the world and provide a wide variety of services ranging from website design and development, writing, and editing to creating videos and songs, advertising, voice over acting reviewing resumes and more.

The common misconception with Fiverr is that sellers can’t earn a lot of money because the gigs are so cheap. Many Fiverr sellers offer additional services and add-ons so they can list extra gigs for $15-$40.

For example, if you advertised a gig for voice over acting, you could provide a basic package for 60 seconds for $5. But if customers wanted a 90-second recording delivered in 24 hours you could increase your prices by offering a higher rate.

Earn Rewards and Gift Cards Through Swagbucks

Swagbucks is a loyalty rewards site that allows your to earn points or ‘swagbucks’ that you can cash in for gift cards. The points translate into money that you can redeem via gift card so 2500 Swagbucks would equate to a $25 gift card for example.

Downloading the Swagbucks app and signing up is a really low-effort way to earn extra money via gift cards that you can use to make everyday purchases, dine out, give as gifts etc.

There are quite a few ways to earn points with Swagbucks. You can shop online, watch videos, play games, use their search function, and take surveys each day.

When shopping online, Swagbucks offers a certain number of points for every dollar spent with popular retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Kohl’s, and EBay along with a few travel related websites. You can also try out different offers to earn Swagbucks.

Installing their search feature to your computer is another simple way to earn more points because every time you browse the internet, you’ll earn Swagbucks.

5. Start Earning More Money

As you can see, there are many different side hustles to choose from if you are interested in earning extra money. When you’ve cut all your expenses and already stick to a budget, sometimes you need an extra financial boost and side hustle income can provide that.
